RED MANGROVE RHIZOPHORA MANGLE

Red Mangrove, Rhizophora Mangle is distributed in estuarine ecosystems throughout the tropics. Its viviparous “seeds”, in actuality called propagules, become fully mature plants before dropping off the parent tree. 

 

 

The Red Mangrove has reddish-brown bark and dark green leathery leaves 5 to 15 centimeters (2 to 6 inches) long. The white to cream-colored flowers are 1.6 to 2.4 cm (1/2 to 1 inch) in size and produce a dark brown ovoid berry that is 3 cm long.

 

 

 

Mangrove tree bark, leaves, fruits, roots, seedlings, and stems are used to treat various conditions. Some of these conditions include healing wounds, diarrhea, stomachaches, diabetes, inflammation, skin infections, conjunctivitis (pink eye), and toothaches. It can even be used as a mosquito repellent.

 

Numerous medicines derived from mangroves (ashes or bark infusions) can be applied for skin disorders e.g. Lumnitzera racemosa and sores including leprosy. They have been reported to treat different kinds of diseases (headaches, boils, ulcers, and diarrhea).
